“You belong here.”

“Neon signs typically inform us of matter-of-fact information: whether motels have rooms available, if roadside attractions are open or closed. In this work, Tavares Strachan offers a seemingly straightforward phrase spelled out in neon: You belong here. This ostensibly concrete and affirmative declaration–part of a series of three phrases that includes I belong here and We belong here–is, upon closer reflection, abstract and fluid. Who exactly do we, you, and I refer to? Is I the artist or the (ever-changing) viewer? As Strachan recently stated: “As humans, we all struggle with how we fit in and belong. Who gets to determine who belongs where? And where is here? And why does it matter?”
